falkla[s82,jmc] Notes on the Falklands
1. What the British can do to avoid humiliating General Galtieri has
been a concern of the deep thinkers. A solution suggests itself that
would be a great compliment to him and would improve the attractiveness
to tourists of St. Helena.
2. Come the year 2000, the Falklands with 5,000 square miles of area
may have a population of 5,000,000. As 1997 approaches, the inhabitants
of Hong Kong may prefer living there to the alternative.
3. More seriously, justice would suggest $15 billion in reparations,
the disarmament of Argentina, and the trial of the junta as war
criminals. Avoiding further trouble might require that the British
be able to threaten greater harm to Argentina from the Falklands than
the Argentines can do to the Falklands.
4. It would have been better if the U.S. had actively helped the British.
That would have taught the lesson that attacking someone when he isn't
looking is likely to be resented by his friends. As it is, the lesson
is that mere surprise isn't enough if the other guy is enough bigger
than you are.
